hmm.  now you can do (for example) two things:

1) have you looked at what startx says about it, for example after
some `startx >& /tmp/z'?  you may be able to determine the error from
its output.

2) if not, you can try 'strace startx' to find out more.

usually, olvwm works quite well, so just keep trying, it's just the
question of time.  good luck :-)
