Question about sane

Hi, I have a general question about linux and a debian specific one ...

I grabed sane-0.66 and tried to compile xscanimage... it didn't work ...
so I was wondering if there was a binary debian package of sane ...?
where would I get it ... (I didn't see it on ftp.debian.org or
ftp.wgs.com)

my general question is about my failed compile ... does anyone know what
the following message means and how do I fix it?
