Upgraded to libc6; Broke my system

Subject:
Hi, all

Recently I tried to upgrade my debian 1.3.1 system from libc5 to
libc6, following scrupulously the instructions in the Mini-HOWTO.
I had no problems using dpkg to install one at a time all the way
through perl_5.004.02-1.deb and perl-tk_400.202-3.deb. I wish I'd
stopped at that point! But I recklessly went on to install
perl-suid_5.004.02-1.deb and perl-debug_5.004.02-1.deb. OOPS.

Now, most important programs fail to start. I get the message:
  "error loading shared libraries
   /usr/lib/libgnumalloc.so.5: undefined symbol:
__default_morecore_init"
This happens with (for example) startx, perl, and (worst of all) dpkg.
Since dpkg is broke, I can't try to uninstall things.

Can anyone tell me
  a) what is going on, and
  b) what, if anything, I can do about it?

TIA.
