As you've gotten your to work, would you mind answering a question?

When you run xkeycaps, for the delete key, do you get something that 
looks like this:

   KeyCode:   Delete  0x6B  107  0153
   KeySym:    Delete
   ASCII:     ^?  0x7F  127  0177
