I may be stepping out on a limb here as I am far from being a
Linux expert. I mostly just plod along trying to get my own modest
system working correctly and doing a few simple things (And when I finally
get something to work I sit back and quietly think to myself `Thank god
there is an alternative to MicroSoft'). However, your problem is so
similar to my own experience with X that I thought I would reply for what
it is worth.

My mouse has a switch that lets me choose between two modes PC and
MS. I thought that MS meant MicroSoft, but apparently it means
MouseSystems. I had to change the following line in the file XF86Config
(and not the file xf86config) from :

		Section "Pointer"
			Protocol "MicroSoft"

to :

			Protocol "mousesystems"

and this solved the middle button problem.

Just in case you also have a switched mouse, beware of this
additional little point. According to the HOWTO I read, many switched
mice were apparently assembled incorrectly. If you want to have it in
MouseSystems mode (and thereby enjoy the benefits of three buttons)
switch it to PC. If you want to have it in MicroSoft or IBM-PC
compatible mode, switch it to MS.

I hope that you soon get your mouse working.

	Ta,

	Gerald Crimp
