 You can find good drivers for the AWE 64 from:

  The current version is 0.4.something, and is working very well with my
  AWE Gold :). I had sound working in quake with no problems in less
  than 10 minutes.

 I don´t think so. Just check that the devices (/dev/dsp, etc.) have correct
 permissions. Btw. what does "cat /dev/sndstat" give ?
