Is netdiag the package you are looking for?
/usr/sbin/statnet
/usr/sbin/trafshow
/usr/sbin/netwatch
/usr/bin/netload

Dunno. Wasn't there a maximum to the lenght of a BNC cable? (100 meters
or thereabouts)?
