If you get your net access working and choose the ftp access method and 
point it to ftp.debian.org or a nearby mirror, it will work mostly by 
itself. Dselect retrieves a list will recent packages information and 
compares that with the information it has on the packages on your
system.
If a package that is installed on your system has a version number lower
than the version on the ftp archive, dselect will automatically try to
download the package and install it. Unless you mark it "on hold". If
you 
are going to use dselect's ftp mode, it is best to put every installed
package on hold first, because otherwise you might risk starting a 30 h.
ftp session.
