My RedHat-4.1 has /etc/bashrc as well as /etc/profile.

The latter includes the lines:

   # System wide environment and startup programs
   # Functions and aliases go in /etc/bashrc

/etc/profile used to say "Commands common to all logins".

Best wishes,
Ted. (Ted.Harding@nessie.mcc.ac.uk)
