I suggest booting with a rescue floppy, mounting your hard drive, and
editing /mnt/etc/X11/config. Replace "start-xdm" with "no-start-xdm", and
replace "xdm-start-server" with "no-xdm-start-server". This should
prevent xdm from starting up.
