New Install - CDROM not a block device?

Hi,
I've just installed 1.3.1 but am unable to access the CDrom. Debian says that
the CDROM is not a Block device.
What do I have to do to get the CD Rom recognised?

Base install from floppy to a SCSI disk.
CDROM is on Secondary IDE interface ( /dev/hdb reported at boot )
I can mount the CDROM but not access it.
Primary IDE has disk with OS/2 and NT on it. System times out trying to talk to
/dev/hda.

Regards
