did you actually build your own kernel as described in /usr/doc/kernel-source/debian*.gz?

before you dpkg -i the kernel image just make a copy of your
/lib/modules/2.0.30/ and rm -rf it.
after it worked for me just nice...

it's also not bad to switch to the latest modutils, eg:
modutils_2.1.34-7_i386.deb

to be found in ftp://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/pub/debian/Incoming/ tomorrow
or (if you get on) in ftp://master.debian.org/pub/Linux/Debian/Incoming/

Though I don't know if that needs glibc2, too, because it's not in bo but
in hamm/unstable.

The latest stable version in bo should be found in
ftp://ftp.leo.org/pub/linux/Debian/bo/binary-i386/base/modutils*
