Have you setup your ip numbers, and routing etc correctly?
What's the output of:
route
ifconfig
(to configure this, edit /etc/init.d/network)

No, "network unreachable" doesn't mean the cables are wrong, it ususally
means wrong routes.

ps -ef shouldn't output deamon info. You've probably BSD/SysV syntax,
whereas Debian ps uses SysV/BSD syntax.
Try "ps -ax"
