One of the great features of teTeX is the accompanying documentation
coming with it. Just check the "$TEXMF/doc/" directory and specially
for LaTeX "$TEXMF/doc/latex/" where you should find a great primer
under "$TEXMF/doc/latex/general/latex2e.dvi", which is a great
document teaching the basics of LaTeX. In fact i used this as my sole
reference when writing my first papers with LaTeX.
