re: laptop advice

I am very happy with my Sharp 9080. You may be able to get one for just
over $3000 - I paid over $4k last fall.

The key feature of this laptop is the absolutely beautiful color active
matrix screen with 1024x768 resolution, which may be key to your
applications. I struggled for a month to get X running on it, but
managed to do so with the help of the XFree folks. There is now a beta X
server available that handles the S3 Aurora chip in this machine.

Everything else runs fine right out of the box.

I have consolidated all my work onto this machine as I find he screen
much easier to look at than my 17 inch NEC monitors.

Hi,

I am new to this list. I apologize in advance for asking a question
that is probably fairly common.

I will buy a laptop sometime soon and would like it to run X windows
under Debian Linux. I am trying to set up something that is as much
like the sun sparc 2 I have at work as possible (but spend around
$3000!). The programs that I use the most are emacs, TeX, and various
technical math programs, usually shareware things written in C, but I
will probably also run Maple. I program in perl and C. If anyone out
there has an opinion about which laptop to get and where I would
greatly appreciate advice.

Thanks,
Dave
