I use mgetty religiously and love it! A truly fine getty. If you 
switched from a regular getty to mgetty your problem is likely because
you've got your modem set to auto-answer. mgetty will only become
confused if the modem answers automatically. mgetty wants to issue
it's own answer command to the modem. (When used with Caller-ID,
this allows mgetty to only answer calls from a predefined set of
numbers!) mgetty can also auto-recognize PPP and start up PPP instead
of /bin/login so that you can authenticate solely with PAP and CHAP.
