Fax programs! help please. (fwd)
As a traditional DOS-user who does not like Windows I have been trying out
Linux for the past few months and I am impressed
escpecially with LaTeX (I use TeTeX because of problems with the debian
LaTeX packages I experienced), Emacs, lynx and pine.
I also want to use my Linux-setup for faxes. I have a Zoltrix 14400
fax/voice modem and as far as I understand its documentation it is a class
1 modem. That disqualifies mgetty as the program I should use for faxes.
The new mgetty packages gave me hope that I may be able to use voicegetty
with another fax-program but even the voicegetty documentation so far did
not give me a clue as to how I can record and use messages to answer my
telephone. Maybe I do not have enough patience while reading the detailed
manuals.
So far I have looked at ZyXel, mgetty, efax and hylafax. All of them (for
me) are so difficult to configure that I am on the point of quitting it
altogether. I do not have time to study manuals for days to try and
configure a single program. I want to use the program as a user, not as a
developer. ^^^^
I seems to me that I have to know perl or some other programming language
to write front-programs to be able to use the real programs effectively.
I do not have the time for that.
Is there any fax program or voice-mail program available that is
user-friendly?
While trying out "faxanswer" from Hylafax, I do not know how to
specify my modem. It expects a modem device starting with FIFO.
There is supposed to be a FIFO file which I cannot find. I tried
/dev/cua3 and got an error message "FIFO._dev_cua3: open: No such file
or directory"
I would really like more of my friends to use Linux, but I would only be
able to encourage them if Linux become more user friendly. Most computer
users are computer illiterates and the program user-interfaces must
overcome that problem.
Sorry to burden you with my problem. Maybe there are more people like me
experiencing the same problems.
Johann.
