xdm cannot read Xresources via /lib/cpp
Hi!
Here at work I have a problem since debian 1.2.1, whereas at home
(using debian 1.2/frozen) things go smoothly. I'd like people to
point me towards what else to check...
What I do:
xdm start
starts without starting the Xserver, o.k.
X -query localhost
gives me the login Window, almost o.k.
the login window is black/white, not o.k.
What goes wrong:
xdm can't read its Xresources (which is too bad, since I want
to do more than just colors with them, but whereas at home
everything works, here I have started with a plain installation
and not even begun editing the Xresource files)
The errormessage goes:
# cd /var/log/
# cat xdm-errors
/usr/X11R6/bin/xrdb: cannot run '/lib/cpp -traditional -Dlinux
-D__i386__ -D_POSIX_SOURCE -D_BSD_SOURCE -D_SVID_SOURCE -DX_LOCALE
[snip. A *long* command line!]
-DCLASS_PseudoColor_8=32 -DCLASS_DirectColor_8=33
-DCLASS_GrayScale_8=34 -DCLASS_StaticColor_8=35 -DCLASS_TrueColor_8=36
-DCLASS_StaticGray_8=37'
My debugging attempts so far:
1) I cut&pasted the whole command line in TextConsole, and a
cat Xresources | cpp
works just fine. cpp is in place, permissions right, etc.
2) started with startx, used xrdb manually, things are fine.
3) fiddled with strace, and got lost in the guts of xdm
Who knows what next? Anyone who had the same problem? The system at home
runs X 3.2, too, so why does that work? Which files, permissions,
authorisation etc. to check next? Any package I missed, anything ?
So long,
Steffen
