I also installed 1.1 from scratch this week-end. I could say it went smoothly:
I mistaked hardware problems with the ethernet card for software one because
of a "modproble: can't locate module net-pf-3" error message. Now, I'm waiting
for a new ethernet card to continue the installation.

I also had the same keyboard problem. I solved it by replacing empty
*console* in the /etc/rc.boot (no more sure of the name) directory by
a symbolic link to /etc/init.d/console.

By the way, is it possible to choose and load the keyboard table at the
start of the installation procedure? It is something annoying having to
correct everything you type... I scrambled my password because of this :(
