This is turning out to be a FAQ.  I made a small mistake in the 
configuration scripts for the latest versions of the X packages. You need 
to add the line:

#debian-not-configured

...to the file /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers and then run /usr/sbin/xbase-configure.

I'll release corrected packages soon - but I think I have to finish my 
dissertation first.
