I have my old R6 system backed up in a tgz file, and have put it back on
one drive or another several times. One of the things that allows me to
do this is that I boot up with loadlin not lilo so I don't have to worry
about mbr problems.
Two things you will need to do. When you tar the system, you will want to
use two options. First you want the option that forces tar to follow all
symlinks. Second you want the option that maintains the leading slash on
all path names. You will need to look these up, as I don't remember what
their option letters are.

Good Luck,

Dwarf
