Out of curiosity, is there any reason why you aren't using the 
distribution from the X consortium?  It seems that that would provide a 
better future support path.  I for one would rather see a Debianized 
Xview than a Debianized Slacked Xview.

I don't have anything particular against Slackware (or, at least 
nothing I should mention here), but it seems a bit round-about.  

FWIW, I installed the xview libraries and binaries on my system 
directly from the X distribution.  They installed cleanly in 
/usr/local.  The only change I had to do was to change my ld.config 
files.
