What usually happens to me when I try this, is, I wake up to find that I
have gotten the first 3 files before, the phone line died / my provider
croaked / the ftp site went belly up.
On the serious side, I only have 14.4 ppp out of my machine and managed
to get the whole R6 binaries in under 2 weeks. This isn't a bad thing,
though. I highly recommend that new Linux users build their systems
slowly, a piece at at time, so that understanding of the various
interactions of the packages.
For those who will use ppp for net access, I recommend starting with the
base system, adding netstd, netbase, and ppp packages to get net access
and then work your way to a full system from there. Start with important
packages you will use and work your way from there.
I understand that for some, this isn't really feasible, due to rate
issues. As I am a local call to a fixed price provider, I pay the same in
either case.
If you have a supported CD rom drive and access the CD distribution you
should certainly go for it.
