compress is indeed non-free (it uses the algorithm that Unisys has a
patent for, the same one that is such a problem for GIF). However,
for uncompressing, gunzip works fine. From the manual page:
gunzip can currently decompress files created by gzip,
zip, compress, compress -H or pack
A link uncompress->gunzip might be nice, although I couldn't care less
for myself, since I rarely have to deal with .Z's anymore. The link
doesn't exist on my system, but I haven't upgraded anything in a while).

Indeed; I have zip and unzip installed. They're in the non-free directory.
(I don't know about the others for sure.)
