But why does it about 20 seconds (on a Pentium with 16 MB) before the man page
for bash shows up?  Is that for groffing the man page or for finding memory
for this buffer because the pager eats it all at once?

groff -man -Tlatin1 /usr/man/man1/bash.1 takes about 6 seconds.
