That is certainly the most straight forward solution.. however there is
a wall here that's a bit annoying.. why do I have to resort to a floppy
based kick-boot when I pulled everything off the net ? Surely it should
be possible to cd to an empty partition, type "make debian-net" and go
have a cuppa.
   
   A few people have tried an upgrade-in-place from Slackware to Debian.
   The result is that not every old Slackware file gets overwritten, and
   you end up with a "combination" system. Debian's really only designed
   to upgrade itself, not other distributions.

In my case, I have 500 meg drive (big deal, another challenge however) and
half it's clear ready to accept another dist... redo lilo and boot into
another world... if all is well them rm -rf the previous dist's partitons.

But to get to the above stage I need a working debian "base" setup...
