The organization of the Debian package names looks (as I understand
it) like this:

packagename: name of the package
version: source changes, new features, bug fixes, etc.
release: debian package changes, setup script & other control files

Thus, "sudo-1.3.1pl4-1.deb" is...

package: sudo
version: 1.3.1 (patch-level 4)
release: 1

                                 ( bcwhite@bnr.ca )

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they're not.
