Debian with Adaptec 2840/2842?

I'm interested in trying out debian. However, I have an Adaptec
2840/2842VL scsi controller (for my Conner 1080s hard drive and my
cdrom), and I notice that it is not listed as a supported controller
at www.debian.org. Is this correct?

I currently use slackware 2.2 (linux kernel 1.2.1), which includes an
alpha driver for my controller. Is this not included with debian
because it is alpha (this would be understandable, since debian is
striving to be a stable distribution)?

What work-around would people recommend? Can I configure and compile
a kernel for my machine, and then copy this to the debian
boot/installation disk? What sort switches would I need to pass to
"rdev" to make such a kernel work?
