Re: System Hangs and the Kernel
Dale asked:
a: How do I tell what version of the Kernel I am running?
uname -a
b: What version should I be running?
Whatever version runs with your hardware. The 1.2 series of kernels is
dubbed stable, stick with the highest number you can find. 1.3.x kernels
are development kernels. You'd have to compile one but I doubt that you'd
currently benefit from that exercise..
c: Should I install all the packages in /debian/binary/base?
Yes, that's why the directory is called 'base'. The software from that
directory is on the three 'base' floppies, though. So you already have it
installed. You might catch a newer version from the /debian/binary/base
directory.
d: Will this bring me up to a proper kernel
This is totally unrelated. There is the kernel, and there are systems and
applications programs. Kernels are precompiled in the 'image-xyz.deb'
packages, kernel sources are in the 'source-xyz.deb' packages. The rest are
system or apps programs.
Maybe you should go the next decent bookstore and grab a copy of 'Running
Linux'. It is really worth it.
Cheers,
