Re: Debian vs. BOGUS
Hallo Karl Eichwalder!
I'm also quite new to this list and to Debian, so I don't get the
whole intention...
}BOGUS has so called Notes files while Debian has diffs. The BOGUS Notes
}files are separated in sections and subsections; Debian has pre- and
}post-scripts: both these meta-Makefile are quite similar in the end...
}
}But there is one point I do not understand: why do you think is it
}necessary to repack all the original .tar.gz files and to include the
}diffs??? Why not simlpy make a distribution of all the untouched
}.tar.gz files, accompanied with the diff files (and the the binary tree
}wiht .deb files, of course)? hello-1.3.tar.gz and hello-1.3-0.diff.gz
}(or hello-1.3-1.diff.gz, or hello-1.3-2.diff.gz, and so on) should be
}enough.
We heard the arguments of different packing (e.g. tar, shar etc) and
compression methods (gzip, compress etc.), different ways to include
directories etc. But I think it would be very useful to include the
original - of course untouched - package/source to the distribution of
each package.
I would like to have it for one reason. If I know the stuff is patched,
and some packages are patched, I would like to have the possibility to
easily decide what changes I want to apply. Doing so I need the
original source and the patchfile. The patchfile will be edited and
the modified patch will be applied. (BTW: if I can modify a patchfile
I will also be able to look how the sources fit into directories etc.)
This is much easier when the source is right in front of me and not on
some obscure ftp server around the world. Therefore I really would
like to have the original sources, too. Please think of it - at least
if the FSF is going to release Debian on CD. (!)
Have a nice weekend,
Joey
