XFree86 3.1.2-1 now available
XFree86 3.1.2-1 for Debian GNU/Linux is now available at
`ftp.debian.org' in the directory `/debian/binary/x11'. XFree86
3.1.2-1 consists of two required packages and several optional
packages. The required packages are `xlib' (which contains the
XFree86 3.1.2 shared libraries) and `xbase' (which contains the
bare minimum X11R6 system).
It is highly recommended that you download a server package that
supports the video card in your machine. Technically, the server is
optional if you only plan to run X11R6 remotely, but most users will
also plan to run it locally. (If you don't understand what "locally"
and "remotely" mean in this context, you should download a server.)
In this revision, many files previously included with `xbase' have
been moved into a new package called `xstd'. This makes it easier for
the packages to be used as a "tiny X" distribution and to be used in a
network setting with common resources. `xstd' now includes:
* X11R6 contrib software
* X11R6 documentation (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc)
* X11R6 include files (/usr/X11R6/include)
* Static and stub libraries previously included with `xbase'.
It is also highly recommended that you install the `xstd' package.
Changes Relevant To Package Maintainers

Packages maintainers: READ THIS!
`xlib' was separated from `xbase' to allow us to unify packages
that have both character and X11 interfaces, such as Emacs.
Previously, we had to include two *different* packages, one for the
character interface (generally with a `-nox' suffix) and one for the
X11 interface (generally with a `-x' suffix). With a separate `xlib'
package, we need only include one package with a dependency of `xlib'.
With this revision, packages that have both text and X11 interfaces
should no longer provide two packages (`-nox' and `-x'). They should
be linked with the X11R6 shared libraries and depend upon `xlibraries':
DEPENDS: xlibraries
If a program is an X11 program, it should depend upon `X11R6'. It
should also recommend `xserver':
DEPENDS: X11R6
RECOMMENDED: xserver
How To Upgrade
**************
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU *MUST* INSTALL THE xbase PACKAGE WITH dpkg
0.50 OR ABOVE!!! (Previous versions of dpkg do not support virtual
packages.)
Upgrading from 3.1.1-2
======================
To upgrade from revision 3.1.1-2, you should first remove and purge
the `xbaseR6' and `xr5shlib' dummy packages, which are no longer
needed with the addition of support for virtual packages in dpkg.
# dpkg --purge --remove xbaseR6 xr5shlib
Next, you should install the new packages.
# dpkg --install xbase-3.1.2-1.deb xlib-3.1.2-1.deb [...]
Upgrading from 3.1.1-1 or before
================================
Because the names and structure of the packages changed
dramatically between 3.1.1-1 and 3.1.1-2, you will need to take
special steps to upgrade the packages. You will only need to do this
once, and after the upgrade is complete, further upgrades can be done
with dpkg, as usual:
(1) Make a backup copy of your configuration:
# tar cvf etc-X11.tar /etc/X11
(2) Remove all installed X system packages (the client packages,
like xarchie and xxgdb, may remain), purging configuration:
# dpkg --purge --remove xbaseR6 [...]
(3) Install the new X system packages:
# dpkg --install xbase-3.1.2-1.deb xlib-3.1.2-1.deb [...]
(4) Follow the automated steps to configure the package.
(5) Edit or replace the new configuration with your old configuration,
if you like. Several changes and improvements have been made to the
default configuration, however, so it is a good idea to examine the
changes and merge the old configuration by hand rather than blindly
overwriting the new configuration.
