Hola socio,
Pues en primer lugar asegurate de tener bien instalado php4:
apt-get update
apt-get install php4
Después descomenta en httpd.conf la siguiente línea:
LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so
Además te irá bien en httpd.conf modificar la línea:
DirectoryIndex index.html
Para dejarla así:
DirectoryIndex index.html index.phtml
