carga fallida del sistema

Buenas,
estoy instalando debian en una maquina, y le he compilado el kernel 2.4.22 con
el parche de con kolivas. Tras compilar el kernel, ponerlo en el boot, y
reiniciar, falla la carga del sistema con el siguiente error:

La raiz del sistema como habreis supuesto es /dev/hda7. Lo curioso es que si
introduzco el password de root en /dev no hay ningun rastro de los hd (ni
hda, ni hdb, ni hdc, ni ningun otro).
La particion /dev/hda7 es ext3, en teoria con journaling, y funciona
perfectamente con live-cds o montandola manualmente, sin embargo da ese error
y termina la carga del sistema.
Ando un poco perdido con ese error, a ver si me podeis ayudar.
