Existe un paquete debian llamado read-edid que incluye dos
utilidades, aunque sólo para la arquitectura i386, y que permiten
interrogar al monitor sobre sus características. Con ellas, y algo
de suerte si el monitor no es muy antiguo, podrás averigüar la
información que precisas para configurar las X.
Como ejemplo pongo aquí la salida de parse-edid correspondiente a mi
monitor:
