Tienes un problema que suele ocurrir bastante. Ya no me acuerdo si lo del kdm 
te ocurria desde el principio o te paso luego, el caso es que el sevidor de 
fuentes de las X no te rula, o no lo tienes instalado. No se que paquetes 
tienes instalados asi que te voy a dar dos posibles soluciones.
La primera a instalar los paquetes de fuentes de las X. Como no sabrás cuales 
son metete en el dselect y busca xfonts. el comando es "/" igual que en el 
vi.  y para que te busque el siguiente "\". Selecciona los paquetes de 
fuentes que quieras pero como mínimo xfonts-100dpi y xfonts-75dpi y tambien 
mira haber si tienes instalado el paquete xfs-xtt es el servidor de fuentes 
True Type para las X. 
La segunda, si ya están instalados esos paquetes desistalalos y vuelve a 
instalarlos. Puede que te de algún que otro error en la desistalación, en el 
caoso de que no se te desistalen, lo tendrás que hacer a pelo. dpkg -r 
<Nombre de paquete>  y dpkg --purge <Nombre de paquete>. Si esto no va 
tendrás que buscar los paquetes de las X en el CDROM y reinstalarlos a pelo 
dpkg -i <Nombre de Paquete>.
Por cierto otra opcion es desistalar con el dselect todos los paquetes de las 
X, xserver-svga, ...., y luego volver a instalarlos.
