Reinstale o driver.

É o que eu faço aqui.

#apt-get install module-assistant gcc
#m-a prepare

Depois executo o instalador que baixei da página da Nvidia.

O Sr. deve estar utilizando o kernel DI ( linux-image-2.6.18-4-486 ) .
Instale um kernel específico para a sua máquina .
Para verificar todas as versões de kernel disponíveis use :
apt-cache  search  linux-image-2.6.18
Se for um AMD, use um dos kernels  K7 .
Se for Intel P4 use un dos kernels  686

Após eu instalar o kernel para amd a minha memória foi reconhecida como 1012 acho que agora esta certo, mas meu x que antes estava como o driver da nvidia nao abriu mais eu tive que alterar o nvidia por nv, para que ele carrega-se o X de novo. 
alguem sabe o que pode ser
