olá,

em vez de usar o comando
wel@voronoi:~$ sudo mount -t ext3 /etc/fd0 /mnt/floppy
rode o comando

$ mount -t ext3 /etc/fd0 /mnt/floppy

como super-usuário. Atenção com o ponto de montagem, parece-me que no seu caso
seria melhor:

$ mount -t ext3 /etc/fd0 /media/floppy

sempre como super-uruário (a famosa e popular dona "root")
