Duvida do inetd.conf

Pessoal, alguem tem alguma boa razao por que alguns servicos vem habilitados no /etc/inetd.conf? Ou entao uma provavel utilidade para eles?

# Internal services
discard stream tcp nowait root internal
discard dgram udp wait root internal
daytime stream tcp nowait root internal
time stream tcp nowait root internal

#:INFO: Info services
ident stream tcp wait identd /usr/sbin/identd identd

Os internals tudo bem, tem uma explicacao meio coxa na manpage; mas e o ident?? Qual a funcao dele?

man inetd:
Inetd provides several ``trivial'' services internally by use of routines
within itself. These services are ``echo'', ``discard'', ``chargen''
(character generator), ``daytime'' (human readable time), and ``time''
(machine readable time, in the form of the number of seconds since mid
night, January 1, 1900). All of these services are tcp based. For
details of these services, consult the appropriate RFC from the Network
   Information Center.
