Duvida do inetd.conf

Pessoal, alguem tem alguma boa razao por que alguns servicos vem habilitados 
no /etc/inetd.conf? Ou entao uma provavel utilidade para eles?

discard         stream  tcp     nowait  root    internal
discard         dgram   udp     wait    root    internal
daytime         stream  tcp     nowait  root    internal
time            stream  tcp     nowait  root    internal

#:INFO: Info services
ident        stream  tcp     wait    identd  /usr/sbin/identd    identd


Os internals tudo bem, tem uma explicacao meio coxa na manpage; mas e o 
ident?? Qual a funcao dele?

man inetd:
   Inetd provides several ``trivial'' services internally by use of routines
   within itself.  These services are ``echo'', ``discard'', ``chargen''
   (character generator), ``daytime'' (human readable time), and ``time''
   (machine readable time, in the form of the number of seconds since mid­
   night, January 1, 1900).  All of these services are tcp based.  For
   details of these services, consult the appropriate RFC from the Network
   Information Center.
