Galileu, esta lista eh propria para os falantes da lingua portuguesa e

Primeiramente, acho que por voce usar o Debian jah a algum tempo,
indico que voce faca a atualizacao de seu sistema para o Woody, que eh
a versao 3.0 (stable). 

Para executar o netscape, podes usar somente o comando
'netscape'. Aqui funciona.

Se voce resolver atualizar seu sistema, indico que voce use o Galeon
ou o Konqueror devido ao poder computacional de sua maquina. O Mozilla
eh um otimo browser mas um pouco (nem tao pouco assim) pesado.

Voce tem varias maneiras de mudar isso. Provavelmente durante a
instalacao voce selecionou via tasksel o sistema do X e devido a isso
ele inclui o xdm, wdm, kde ou gdm na inicializacao (nao lembro qual o
padrao).

Voce pode remove-lo, usando o apt-get seria:

apt-get remove pacote --purge

ou remove-lo da inicializacao usando:

update-rc.d -f <gerenciador> remove
