ip_forward switch = on no kernel -- vantagens e desvantagens

Para quê habilitar
ip_forward switch = on
no kernel? Eu pergunto no contexto de habilitar uma firewall onde depois teremos que filtrar o forward.
O easyfw propôe isso, mas eu não entendi bem por quê.
