Also "stripe" klingt fuer mich besser. Und ausserdem faellt das in
den Punkt "other modes are only supported with persistent
superblocks"

Wie sicher bist du dir, das du ein "old raid arrays without
persistent superblocks" angelegt hast?

Probiere im Zweifel doch einfach mal 
md=0,/dev/hda2,/dev/hdb2
bzw.
md=d0,/dev/hda2,/dev/hdb2
