Ich weiß zwar nicht was der quick'n'dirty hack ist, aber ich habe auch
wlan und Kabel und habe keine timeouts.

Ich verwende halt ifplugd für ifup/down und wpasupplicatn für das
scannen von wlan aps. Wenn wpasupplicant was findet, dann configuriert
es das wlan interface so weit dass es ifplugd mitbekommt und ifup wlan0
macht. Und wenn ein Kabel angesteckt wird wird aich dhpclient gestartet
für das eth0 interface.
