Was für ein filesystem benutzt Du für / 'root' ?
Ich habe die wichtigsten Dateisysteme fest in den Kernel einkompiliert
$ grep FS /usr/src/$DIE_KERNEL2.6.4_QUELLEN/.config
...
CONFIG_REISERFS_FS=y
CONFIG_EXT2_FS=y
CONFIG_EXT3_FS=y
...
Zumindest das root file system soltest Du fest einkompilieren. AFAIR
kannst Du _dan_ auf initrd verzichten. Das wird AFAIK von
Distributionen verwendet, um das root file system nicht auf ein
bestimmtes system zu beschränken (nämlich das fest einkompilierte).
Vielleicht ist es auch noch bei LVM oder RAID root systeme notwendig,
kann ich aber gerade nichts näheres zu sagen.
So weit ich weiß ist es 'normalerweise' nicht nötig.
