Vielleicht hilfts:
Ich musste das Framebufferdevice in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
auskommentieren (oder "false"):
[...]
Section "Device"
[...]
# Option "UseFBDev" "true"
Ich habe meine nvidia Karte aber auch schon im framebuffermodus
betrieben, allerdings wahrscheinlich mit dem nvidia-treiber, der für
den kernel compiliert werden muß.
Vielleicht benötigst Du auch die module von matrox?
Ansonsten sind eventuell die sync-Raten des Monitors falsch eingestellt.
Versuche es mal mit dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 oder wie schon
empfohlen xf86cfg -textmode.
