fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed

Hallo ,
seit gestern (upgrade) bekomme ich beim aufruf von fetchmail
immer folgende Meldung:
fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: POP3> QUIT
fetchmail: POP3< 
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from pop.claranet.de
fetchmail: 5.9.8 querying pop.claranet.de (protocol POP3) at Don 07 Mär 2002 19:09:03 CET: poll completed
fetchmail: Abfragestatus=10 (SMTP)
fetchmail: normal termination, status 10
bei diesem upgrade wurde auch fetchmail upgedated.
Ich habe im Netz gesucht und dort stand das der MTA nicht laufen
würde (was mich verwundert da exim ordnungsgemäss ausliefert)
ein telnet ergab
rincewind:/home/arne# telnet localhost smtp
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
wie gesagt gestern hat es noch funktioniert
ein ping sagt:
--- rincewind ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 0.1/0.1/0.2 ms
für einen hinweis wäre ich dankbar.
