X ne démarre plus

Bonjour,

J'ai reçu nouvel écran lcd. Donc je démarre mon PC (debian etch) avec le câble vidéo débranché pendant que je déballe l'écran.
Je branche et me retrouve sous gdm en 640x480. Je me loggue normalement, mais pas moyen de changer la résolution dans les préférences de gnome.

Je m'étonne un peu, et redémarre (p'tet qu'il détecte un truc pendant le boot...).
=> gdm apparait bien en 1280x1024, mais je reviens sur l'écran de login juste après la saisie login/pass.

Je démarre en single, et je trouve dans mon .xsessions-errors

Bon, bizarre...

Je lance un dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, mais là, j'obtiens "not updating /etc/X11/X; file has been customized"
J'essaie une réinstall de Xorg mais idem "not updating...". Je vire le lien et renomme la cible (/usr/bin/Xorg), et ensuite je réinstall xorg => idem

J'ai réinstallé tous les paquets contenant "xorg" dans le nom (avec un dpkg --get-selections|grep xorg puis aptitude reinstall en boucle sur la 
liste), mais toujours rien. Le dpkg-reconfigure marche, détecte vesa comme driver video, ce que j'ai laissé. Le message d'erreur gdm change, mais X 
démarre toujours pas:

Bref, j'y perd mon latin.
