[Debian] routing for dummies

gesucht: ein brett-vorm-kopf-zertruemmerer
vor ein paar tagen meinen zweitrechner(t900) zusammengebaut, mit meinem
altrechner(p166) ueber ethernet verbunden und sammle jetzt erste
erfahrungen mit der netzwerkerei.
inet <-> modem <-> p166 <-> switch <-> t900
auf p166 laeuft slink mit kernel 2.2.16, auf t900 potato mit 2.2.17.
folgendes klappt inzwischen:
nameserver mit bind auf p166
telnet, ftp p166 <-> t900
mounten von p166 ueber nfs auf t900
was nicht klappt, ist das routen von t900 aus ins inet. beispiel: ich
sitze vor t900, habe mich auf console 1 bei p166 eingeloggt und setze
ein ping ab:

also alles in ordnung.
jetzt das gleiche von console 2 aus, an der ich mich bei t900 eingeloggt
habe:

dns klappt, routing offenbar nicht.
es folgen die fuer die diagnose notwendigen und hoffentlich
hinreichenden angaben:
