El Window Maker va bastant bé, amb l'avantatge que pots tenir
unes quantes "decoracions" que estiguin bé i anar canviant de
tant, per no avorrir-te :-) Ara, li falta un gestor de fitxers
pel meu gust. Quant tingui això ja serà perfecte.

Jo l'he instal·lat manualment amb Debian "Woody" i no hi ha
cap problema, tret que és una mica pesat. I clar, no està
massa "debianitzat", no hi ha menú, etc... Si pots
instal·lar-lo amb l'apt-get millor per tu, pero no sé si es
pot.

Has provat amb apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-themes xfce4-utils xfwm4
xfce4-mcs-plugins xfce4-panel xfdesktop4 xffm4 xffm4-icons libxfce4mcs-client-1
libxfce4mcs-manager-1 libxfce4util-1 libxfcegui4-1?
En alguns diu "not installable" que fa mala pinta, però de
totes maneres pots instal·lar components sols. Jo instal·laria
tot el que puguis amb Debian i la resta a mà.
