xlibmesa problems

Is there anyway to get xlibmesa to coexist with the "older" mesa libraries? 
I have an application linked to libMesaGL.so.3 and libMesaGLU.so.3, which is
not provided by xlibmesa.  As I recall the packages conflict with one another.
