Subnet Mask: tried both 255.255.0.0 and 255.255.255.0

I have a windows 98 <-> Debian LAN at home, and I can't seem to get either computer to ping the other one.  Are there any special configurations I have to set up to make a doze box talk to a linux box?  A website address would be very useful if you could supply it.  Thanks :)
